‘The Plain Truth’ Birthed to Rock the Young Generation
25 February 2010 l By Cora Mamatela

South African Christian Worship has been revolutionised by the Worship Team, ‘The Plain Truth’.

Award-winning music group, ‘The Plain Truth” has become the new symbol of Christian music in South Africa. The pop-rock worship team has become the bridge of representing authentic Christian music in an exciting and radical way to the rising generation of South Africa.
Co-founded by Gareth Lee and Andrew Williams, ‘The Plain Truth’ derives its name from the scripture 1Timothy 2:7 (Message Bible): “This and this only has been my appointed work: getting this news to those who have never heard of God, and explaining how it works by simple faith and plain truth”.
The worship team has defined itself by using music to present the message of the Gospel to the South African youth in a simple and plain way.
Known as one of the best worship teams in South Africa, ‘The Plain Truth’ is no stranger to winning prominent awards such as ‘Best DVD’ at the SABC Gospel Crown Music Awards in 2008 for ‘God Above the Universe’ and ‘Only One God’ 2009.
This year the ‘Only One God’ album is up for nomination for ‘Best Global Chart DVD’ and ‘Best Contemporary Christian Album’ at the 16th Annual MTN South African Music Awards (SAMA).
Songs on the album are written on deep personal level and are birthed according to what the team is spiritually going through at that time.
‘We always make sure that the album is always uplifting and encouraging, which always comes back to the name of ‘The Plain Truth’, which is presenting the gospel which is good news’, Gareth said.
The nationwide success of the ‘The Plain Truth’ can be directly attributed to its colourful graphic content when playing in live performances.
Gareth says, ‘The graphic content of ‘The Plain Truth’ and the graphic identity of the band has actually become one of the things that’s been key to our success so far, it’s what people are identifying with’.
This directly helps the crowd to be involved with songs. The audience is encouraged to participate in sing-a–long anthems while the team is performing live. Songs become visually and audibly alive as lyrics are shown with graphics at the same time.
Gareth also mentioned that what uniquely distinguishes the team from other music bands is that ‘The Plain Truth’ is not a band but a ministry which is sold out on a cause to bring the good news of the gospel to the youth of South Africa.
‘The Plain Truth’ is in the process of releasing their first studio album. The sound tracks will have a digital element and an electronic sound. The nationwide album release is expected to be in early June and sales are expected to rocket.
DVD/ CD albums are sold nationwide in gospel stores.
Catch the ‘The Plain Truth’ at Christian Family Church International, Johannesburg every Friday evenings at 18:00 and on Sunday evenings on 17:30.
